The implant process at Southside Dental
1. Consultation and 3D planning. Examination, X-rays and imaging to assess your bone and plan the ideal implant position.
2. Implant placement. The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. Most patients are surprised how manageable this visit is, and normal activities usually resume quickly.
3. Healing. Over the following months the bone integrates with the implant — the foundation that makes an implant feel so stable. We monitor your healing along the way.
4. The crown. Once integrated, a custom crown is attached, matched in shape and colour to your natural teeth.
Implant, bridge or denture? The honest comparison
There are three ways to replace a missing tooth, and the best one isn't always the most expensive.
A dental implant stands on its own. It doesn't touch the neighbouring teeth, it keeps the jawbone stimulated where the root used to be, and once the crown is on it's cleaned like any other tooth. It is the longest process and the highest up-front cost.
A dental bridge spans the gap using crowns on the teeth either side. It's finished in a few weeks and costs less than an implant, but those supporting teeth have to be prepared, and the bridge needs special flossing underneath.
A partial denture is removable, the least invasive and the lowest cost, and a reasonable choice for some people — but it can feel bulky, moves slightly when you eat, and doesn't prevent bone loss.

After implant surgery: what to expect
Most people are back to normal activities the next day. Expect some swelling and tenderness for a few days, managed with simple over-the-counter pain relief and a cold pack in the first 24 hours. Stick to soft foods for a few days and chew on the other side; keep the area clean with gentle rinsing from the day after surgery and careful brushing around (not on) the site. Long term, an implant needs the same thing your natural teeth do: daily brushing and flossing, and regular check-ups and cleans so the gum around it stays healthy.
