What is an onlay?
An onlay is a custom restoration made in a dental laboratory, then bonded onto your tooth. Unlike a filling, which is shaped directly in the cavity, an onlay is precision-made outside the mouth from a scan or impression — so it can be stronger and fit the biting surface more accurately. It covers one or more of the tooth's cusps (the raised points), which is why it's sometimes called a partial crown. An inlay is its smaller cousin — it sits between the cusps without covering them.
Filling, onlay or crown — how we decide
Filling. Most of the tooth is still sound, so a direct filling does the job.
Onlay. The cavity or crack is too large for a filling to be reliable, or a cusp has broken away — but the walls of the tooth are still healthy. The onlay replaces the damaged part and shields the weakened cusps, without removing sound tooth all the way around.
Crown. The tooth is cracked through, heavily filled on every surface, or has had root canal treatment — it needs to be wrapped completely.

What onlays are made from

Why choose an onlay over a crown?
- It keeps more of your own tooth. A full crown means shaping the whole tooth; an onlay only touches the damaged part.
- It leaves more options later. Every bit of natural tooth kept now means more to work with if the tooth ever needs treatment again.
- It's gentler on the nerve, because less of the tooth is prepared.
- It shields a weakened cusp before it cracks off completely — which usually means a bigger, dearer repair.
Getting an onlay at Southside Dental
1. Assessment. We examine the tooth and confirm an onlay is the right middle ground — not a filling, not a crown.
2. Preparation. Under local anaesthetic the damaged part of the tooth is removed and shaped, and a precise scan or impression is taken. A temporary restoration protects the tooth while yours is made.
3. Bonding. About two weeks later, the finished onlay is checked for fit and bite, then bonded firmly in place.

Frequently asked questions
Onlay or crown — which lasts longer?
Both last many years when well looked after. A well-bonded onlay on a suitable tooth performs comparably to a crown — with the bonus that more of your natural tooth is preserved if it ever needs work again.
Why not just do a really big filling?
Past a certain size, a direct filling flexes under biting load and the remaining walls of the tooth carry the strain — that's how cusps crack off. A lab-made onlay is stronger and shields those cusps.
Does getting an onlay hurt?
The tooth is numbed for preparation, and bonding the finished onlay is usually comfortable. Some temperature sensitivity for a week or two afterwards is normal and settles.
Will my health fund cover an onlay?
Most extras policies rebate part of the cost. We'll give you the item numbers to quote to your fund before you commit to anything.
Are inlays and onlays the same thing?
Nearly — an inlay sits within the cusps of the tooth, while an onlay covers one or more cusps. We use whichever the damage calls for, and the process is identical.
